For decades full floating (FF) rear axle assemblies have been used in ¾ ton and 1 ton trucks and vans. A full-floating axle can be identified by a protruding hub to which the axle shaft flange is bolted. In some cases the axle shaft is splined on the outer end and a drive gear and cover is used.

A FF axle system moves the weight off of the axle shaft and onto the axle housing. The axle shaft now only connects the differential to the wheel hub to provide vehicle movement. The wheel bearings are now much larger and able to carry a much greater load.
